Tony Trembath
Tony Trembath lives and works in Melbourne and Beijing and has been working as an artist for over 35 years after an earlier career in scientific research with CSIRO. His art practice is cross discipline with a focus on immersive installation, sculpture and artists' books. He has exhibited extensively across Australia and Internationally. He has curated 11 exhibitions of contemporary Australian Art and recently an Australian touring exhibition of the chance based photography of Chinese artist Li Gang, for the year of Chinese Culture in Australia. With the Department of Actinology as his organisational structure he publishes catalogues, artists' books and other conceptual publications. In China he has been collaborating with Chinese furniture makers and artisans and has exhibited photography, installation and object based sculpture in Beijing. The current exhibition has been a long project in research and production and is now realised as a site responsive installation at Art Seasons Gallery titled - Black Lacquer Panel, Black Lacquer Piano.

Tony Trembath's editions and multiples are an extension of his conceptual work in immersive installation, sculpture and artist's books. Always a little dark in mood and always with a great deal of humour, these works are often the only concrete consequence of his more ephemeral major projects. They also say much about his research processes which draw extensively on reference books or the archive as a source and often express a playful sense of the ridiculous. It is the intention in these works to stimulate enquiry and ongoing interaction, so they don't give up their layers of meaning at first glance, like most of Trembath's art, some effort or commitment is required but there are always doorways. Would we bother to read a book that revealed itself on the first page?
